Dr. John R. Evans, 2007 Friesen International Prizewinner, will deliver a public address at the University of Alberta under the auspices of the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research. This represents his first institutional visit as part of the Friesen Prize Lecture program. THE HENRY G. FRIESEN INTERNATIONAL PRIZE IN HEALTH RESEARCH was established by the Friends of CIHR in collaboration with the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences and CBC Radio One to honour exceptional achievements in Health Research and Health Research Policy internationally. 2007 Public Forum And Reception

The public is invited to attend the second annual address of The Henry G. Friesen International Prize in Health Research. 2007 Prizewinner, Dr. John R. Evans, Chair, MaRS Discovery District, will deliver a public presentation entitled:

"The Infinite Horizon of Health Research: Is Canada Visible?"

The Forum will be held:

Admission to the Forum is free.

A reception will follow at 4:30pm in the Hall d'honneur, Pavillon Roger-Gaudry.


Annual General Meeting:

Friends of Canadian Institutes of Health Research convenes the Annual General Meeting of the Membership:

All members are invited to attend and the meetings will be conducted over a light breakfast.

The 2007-08 Board will be elected at the Annual General Meeting and the Board of Directors cordially invites any interested members to serve on the Board and its Committees and to recommend potential members. Indicate your interest by e-mail to fcihr@fcihr.ca, stating Nominating Committee in the subject line. Expressions of interest must be received on or before Thursday, August 30, 2007.

An Open Meeting of the Board of Directors, commencing the activities of the Board for the coming year, will immediately follow the Annual General Meeting.

Registration for the meetings is required by Thursday, September 6, 2007. Registration fee is $25.00. An invoice is available (MS Word or PDF format), should you require one. Simply complete the form and keep a copy for your records. A receipt will be provided.

Renowned Canadian Physician Wins Prestigious Friesen Prize in Health Research
TORONTO - Canadian physician Dr. John Evans has been named the winner of the 2007 Henry G. Friesen International Prize in Health Research by the Friends of Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.

The prestigious Friesen Prize recognizes the exceptional leadership, vision and innovative contributions of Dr. Henry Friesen, a visionary medical scientist credited with the discovery of the hormone human prolactin.

Public Lecture - "Brain Disease: Health Research Policy for the Public Good"
The Faculty of Medicine and The Centre for Advancement of Medicine at the University of Manitoba hosted a visit to campus by Dr. Joseph B. Martin, Dean of the Harvard Medical School. Dr. Martin is the inaugural 2006 recipient of The Henry G. Friesen International Prize in Health Research.

Winners of The Prize undertake visits to various institutions and the University of Manitoba was the first host. Prizewinners visit multiple centres to encourage discussion and the sharing of ideas in health research and health research policy, with professionals and a broad public audience. The University of Manitoba Faculty of Medicine is a sponsor of The Prize.

Dr. Aubie Angel, President, Friends of CIHR (left) brought national greetings and described the origin and goals of The Henry G. Friesen International Prize in Health Research. Dr. Arnold Naimark, Director, Centre for Advancement of Medicine, chaired the institutional visit of the 2006 Friesen Prizewinner on behalf of the University of Manitoba Faculty of Medicine.

Friends of CIHR took the opportunity to thank the University of Manitoba for the continuing support provided over the past decade, presenting a work by renowned Manitoba artist Tony Tascona along with a dedication plaque. Pictured left to right are: U of M President Emőke Szathmáry, FCIHR President Dr. Aubie Angel, Dr. Dan Roberts, Head, Department of Internal Medicine, U of M, and Dr. Arnold Naimark, Director, Centre for Advancement of Medicine.

2006 Symposium: Addressing the Acute Shortage of Clinician Scientists in Canada was held at the Winnipeg Convention Centre, May 4, 2006, in conjunction with the National Research Forum for Young Investigators in Circulatory and Respiratory Health.
