Symposium 2002 probes academic freedom
A very successful and
well-attended Friends of CIHR Symposium on "Academic Freedom:
Paradigms in Conflict" was held April 29, 2002
at the Calgary Hyatt Hotel. The presenters probed the meaning,
accountability, partnerships and public trust issues involved in
academic freedom. This prompted lively and spirited discussions
about conflict of interest and the responsibilities of individuals,
universities and industry. FCIHR is grateful to the following
sponsors: CIHR for financial support, and to the Association
of Canadian Medical Colleges (ACMC), the Association of Canadian
Academic Healthcare Organizations (ACAHO), the Canadian Association
for Medical Education (CAME) and the Centre for the Advancement of
Medicine at the University of Manitoba and to Dr. Arnold Naimark,
for advice and his role
as raporteur.

Stiller to receive first Friends of CIHR Distinguished Service Award at
"Ottawa Evening"
Dr. Cal Stiller, President
and CEO of the Canadian Medical Discoveries
Fund and a founding member of the Friends of CIHR and its predecessor
organization Alumni and Friends of MRC, is a senior and distinguished
Canadian clinician researcher and entrepreneur who pioneered the
Multi-Organ Transplant Service in London, Ontario. He will receive his
award May 1, 2002 at the "Ottawa Evening," a fundraising gala dinner in
