Dr. Alan Bernstein comments on Romanow report

Dear Colleagues,

I am extremely enthusiastic and positive about the Romanow Report, particularuly as it pertains to research and the importance of evidence to build a cost-effective and sustainable health care system.

The Report states "health research has played an essential role in the history of the public health system and will continue to do so in the future." CIHR is pleased that the Report noted that: "health research ...is an increasingly important component of Canada's knowledge-based economy and a source of high-skilled, well-paid employment for thousands of Canadians." Some key messages: Health research and evidence are an essential foundation for many of the reforms outlined in the Report. CIHR commends the call for action to establish 'Centres for Health Innovation for Applied Policy Research' to bridge the gaps between health research and practice. The Report recognizes the need for increased investment in health research as a means to ensuring a sustainable and evidence-based health care system in the 21st century. Through new discoveries, treatments and interventions, health research improves the quality of life of all Canadians and reduces the economic burden of illness on the economy.

Commissioner Romanow has identified the importance of solidarity among key players in the federal, provincial, voluntary and private sectors to create a collaborative Canadian health system. CIHR, as part of its mandate, will play a leadership role in facilitating critical collaborative research efforts across the country. CIHR and Canada's health research community are ready to play a key role in the development of a transformative, sustainable and truly national health system.

I would encourage everyone, when asked, to speak positively and in favour of this very strong Report.
