October 19, 2006:
Dr. John Foerster receives Distinguished Alumni Award at the University of Manitoba
FCIHR Charter member Dr. John Foerster, was the recipient of the 2006 Distinguished Alumni Award by the University of Manitoba Alumni Association. Dr. John Foerster was recognized for his contribution to the university, to the medical profession and to advancing medical research in the province. The commitment he has demonstrated through professional and volunteer activities encompasses a broad scope of influence in all aspects of life.

Dr. Foerster is a professor at the University of Manitoba Faculty of Medicine and a specialist in hematology and oncology. In addition, for 20 years he has been the Executive Director of Research at St. Boniface General Hospital.

The Distinguished Alumni Award is presented annually to an alumnus or alumna who demonstrates outstanding professional achievement, significant service to the University of Manitoba, and significant contributions to the community and to the welfare of others.

Dr. Joseph B. Martin to address Public Forum in Ottawa
Dr. Joseph B. Martin, Dean, Harvard School of Medicine and inaugural winner of The Henry G. Friesen Prize in Health Research, will speak at the Public Forum in Ottawa. The Forum will be held in the National Gallery of Canada Auditorium, 380 Sussex Drive. Dr. Martin's presentation is entitled Brain Disease: Health Research Policy for the Public Good and will be taped for later broadcast on the CBC Radio One program Ideas.

The Forum begins at 3:30pm with Master of Ceremonies Paul Kennedy, host of Ideas. Other guests include Dr. Henry G. Friesen, Dr. Alan Bernstein, President of CIHR, Dr. Paul Armstrong, President, CAHS, and Dr. Aubie Angel, President FCIHR.

The Public Forum is a key element of The Henry G. Friesen International Prize in Health Research. Regional dialogue is also an important part of the program and a visit to the University of Manitoba is planned later this year. Dr. Martin will also be honoured at several other events while he is in Ottawa.

The Forum will be followed by a coffee reception in the Watercourt Foyer at 5:00pm.
All are invited to attend and admission is free.

FCIHR member to receive Order of Canada.
July 24, 2006: Dr. C. David Naylor, President of the University of Toronto and a member of FCIHR will be appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada. The announcement was made by Governor General Michaelle Jean, July 24, 2006.

A Rhodes Scholar and renowned researcher, Naylor earned his medical degree at the University of Toronto, then continued his studies at Oxford University. He returned to Toronto and joined the Faculty of Medicine in 1987. He was appointed Dean of Medicine in 1999. In 2003. following the SARS outbreak, he was named Chair of the National Advisory Committee on SARS and Public Health. He became President of the University in October 2005.

Also receiving an Officer of the Order of Canada appointment is University of Toronto Professor Emeritus Mary Seeman. Dr. Seeman has earned international recognition for her work in schizophrenia, in particular for identifying gender differences in clinical symptoms, treatment and outcome. Dr. Seeman is married to FCIHR Member Dr. Philip Seeman who shares professional interests in psychiatry and pharmacology.

Canadian Neuroscientist Wins International Prize For Research and Innovation in the Delivery of Health Care
July 12, 2006: Internationally renowned Canadian, Dr. Joseph B. Martin, Dean of the Harvard Faculty of Medicine, was named the inaugural winner of The Henry G. Friesen International Prize in Health Research today and will deliver a public lecture scheduled for September 26 at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa.

New International Prize in Health Research Announced
The Henry G. Friesen International Prize in Health Research is the joint initiative of Friends of Canadian Institutes of Health Research (FCIHR) and the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (CAHS). The Prize was established to recognize the vision and distinguished leadership of Dr. Henry G. Friesen, a renowned Canadian endocrinologist and medical scientist, to develop the concept that became the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.


The 2006 FCIHR Symposium: "Addressing the Acute Shortage of Clinician Scientists in Canada" was held Thursday, May 4, 2006, in conjunction with the National Research Forum for Young Investigators in Circulatory and Respiratory Health at the Winnipeg Convention Centre.
