September 2005 AGM
Members of FCIHR assembled in Vancouver this past September for the
Annual General Meeting. Following the invigorating discussions, several
FRIENDS gathered for a photograph at the close of the afternoon's
deliberations.

Vancouver bustled with Health Research activity in late September.
Several organizations, FCIHR among them, scheduled meetings and
conferences there during the week of September 19th. This allowed
participants to share in a number of related activities very
effectively. A highlight was the inauguration of the Canadian Academy of
Health Sciences (CAHS).
Following the FCIHR Annual General Meeting several FRIENDS were guests
at the CAHS Inaugural Gala Dinner:
Dr. Judith Hall (Pediatrics, UBC Women's Health Care Centre, Vancouver)
catches up on the latest news with FCIHR Director Emeritus Dr. Henry
Friesen (Distinguished Professor Emeritus, University of Manitoba,
Winnipeg) recipient of the FCIHR Distinguished Service Award for 2005.

Happy to see each other at the auspicious occasion were Dr. Watanabe
(University of Calgary Faculty of Medicine) (left) and FCIHR Board
President, Dr. Aubie Angel (Senior Fellow, Massey College, Toronto).

Valerie Tingle enjoyed the opportunity to meet with associates.
Newly appointed FCIHR Vice President, Dr. Henry Dinsdale (Professor
Emeritus, Queen's University, Kingston) (right) enjoys a moment of
camaraderie with Dr. Jacques de Champlain (University Health Network).
Addressing those gathered for the inauguration event was Dr. Paul
Armstrong, President CAHS (left) and the Honourable Ujjal Dosanjh,
Federal Minister of Health.
FCIHR members Dr. Rémi Quirion (Scientific Director, Institute of
Neurosciences, McGill University) (left) and Dr. Rejean Hébert (Dean,
Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Sherbrooke University) exchange
ideas before dinner.

There were smiles all around as FCIHR Board President, Dr. Aubie Angel
and Mrs. Esther Rose Angel (left) made their way into dinner with Dr.
Michael Baker and Mrs. Barbara Baker.

Symposium: Overcoming Barriers to Canada's
Global Competitiveness in Health Research was held at the
Rideau Club in Ottawa, May 11, 2005.
Six speakers shared their views on how governments, industry,
universities, research institutes and volunteer agencies can work together
better, to achieve our national goals in health research.
The
Ottawa Evening, the seventh
annual gala fundraiser and awards banquet held in
conjunction with the Symposium honoured Dr. Henry Friesen with the FCIHR Distinguished Service Award for his significant contributions to health research in Canada.

Symposium: The
Scientist and the Media: Quality Information for Health & Safety was held at the
Winnipeg Convention Centre, April 28, 2005, in collaboration with the National
Research Forum for Young Investigators. A capacity audience of almost 300
health professionals heard focussed discussion from varying viewpoints and
learned practical tips for effective communication with the public through the
news media.
