218 Named to CIHR Institute Advisory Boards
218 volunteer representatives selected from Canada
and abroad and reflecting a broad range of expertise
and interest, will provide advice and insight to the
Scientific Directors of CIHR’s network of 13 virtual institutes

In collaboration with the Scientific Directors, Institute Advisory Boards help fulfill CIHR's objective for all Canadians. Each IAB is led by a Chair, appointed by the Governing Council from among the board members. Within CIHR, each IAB is an essential focal point for gathering expertise, for discussion of, and deliberation on Institute priorities, for guidance on implementation of Institute plans and for dissemination to, and engagement of the broader community.

Roles and Responsibilities

A CIHR Institute Advisory Board will:

  • engage stakeholders with an interest in health research to work together to build an integrated, innovative, interdisciplinary Health Research Institute responsive to Canadian health needs and research opportunities
  • champion integration across disciplines and across the full range of biomedical research, clinical research and research respecting health systems, health services, the health of populations, societal and cultural dimensions of health and environmental influences on health
  • work collaboratively with the Scientific Director to develop the Health Research Institute's Strategic Plan and annual activity plans and budgets for approval by the Governing Council
  • conduct a periodic "self-assessment" and annual evaluation of the performance of the Health Research Institute in meeting the objectives of CIHR, and the objectives outlined in the Institute's strategic plan
  • work collaboratively with the Scientific Director to apply an ethical framework to all Institute activities and research
  • be a source of informed insight from health research community and the public, introducing knowledge, expertise, creativity, insight and innovation to all Institute discussions and activities
  • be a means by which researchers and other stakeholders have input into identifying priorities and potential programs as well as into the strategic direction of the Health Research Institute
  • facilitate communication between the CIHR, the institute and the wider community of researchers, voluntary health agencies, industry, provinces and beneficiaries of health research
  • actively foster networks, partnerships and community interests pursue linkages with other Health Research Institutes for cross-pollination of ideas and collaboration
  • be represented in periodic meetings of IAB Chairs with the President to discuss prospective cross-cutting opportunities and CIHR evolution

Membership

Institute Advisory Boards are made up of 15 to 18 individuals from Canada and abroad, reflecting the greatest possible diversity across the following dimensions:

  1. Research expertise - across the disciplinary scope of Institute research and across the full range of biomedical, clinical research and research respecting health systems, health services, the health of populations, societal and cultural dimensions of health, and environmental influences on health
  2. Community sectors - voluntary health organizations, regional/provincial/federal agencies, business, health care practitioners, health care users, policy makers (national, regional, local levels)
  3. Additional experience/expertise - ethics, training/education, communications, knowledge management
  4. Demographics - province/region, gender, linguistic preference, international, career stage
