\nFriends of CIHR is pleased to announce that Sir Mark Walport, Chief Executive, UK Research & Innovation, and internationally renowned visionary health research planner is the recipient of the 2020 Henry G. Friesen International Prize in Health Research. Dr. Walport joins an illustrious group of scientists, educators, academic leaders and health policy experts.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Biographical Highlights<\/strong><\/p>\n

Toronto \u2013 June 1, 2020 \u2013 Professor Sir Mark Walport, FRS, FMed Sci, FRCP, is Chief Executive of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), which brings together the 7 research councils, Innovate UK and Research England with a budget of more than \u00a37 billion (~ $12B CAD). He is a champion of fundamental science in health research, engineering, technology and innovation.<\/p>\n

Sir Mark obtained his clinical and PhD degrees at Cambridge University. His scientific interests were in the molecular and genetic basis of inflammatory diseases of the joint and he trained clinically as a Rheumatologist. Prior to entering government, Sir Mark was Professor of Medicine and Chair of the Division of Medicine at Imperial College, London, Hammersmith Hospital.<\/p>\n

Through his affiliation with the Wellcome Trust (2000-2013), Sir Mark Walport made major contributions first as Governor and then for 10 years, as Director. He supported some of the most important initiatives in UK biomedicine and saw the completion of sequencing of the Human Genome at the Sanger Centre and championed some of the world\u2019s first policies on Open Access Science. During this time, the Wellcome Trust became the most influential independent funder of medical research in UK, and amongst the most influential globally in biomedical research policy. Much of this was due to Sir Mark\u2019s visionary leadership and perseverance.<\/p>\n

In 2013, he was appointed the UK government\u2019s Chief Scientific Advisor and Head of the government\u2019s Office for Science. In this role, he provided advice to government at the highest level on a range of crucial scientific topics across all scientific domains. This clearly illustrated Mark\u2019s profile and deep understanding of the science agenda, not only in the Life Sciences, but also in important areas such as climate change, digital infrastructure and agriculture.<\/p>\n

Throughout his career Sir Mark has been a vocal supporter for the need to take a collaborative and multidisciplinary approach to tackling the major problems facing society. In 2016, Sir Paul Nurse was asked by government to examine how the UK funding environment might be re-shaped by examining the funding to each of the research councils in relation to their ability to work across disciplines. The idea emerged of an entity called, \u201cUK Research and Innovation\u201d and in 2018, Sir Mark became the first Chief Executive of this bold new concept.<\/p>\n

Throughout his career, Sir Mark has also been an ardent supporter of the arts and a popular TV personality, as spokesperson for science and innovation. Sir Mark has been the recipient of many honours and prizes, including ten Honorary Degrees and a Knighthood in 2009.<\/p>\n

The Henry G. Friesen International Prize in Health Research, established in 2005 by the Friends of Canadian Institutes of Health Research (FCIHR), recognizes exceptional innovation by a visionary health leader of international stature. Toronto – Le 1er juin 2020 – Le professeur sir Mark Walport, FRS, FMed Sci, FRCP, est directeur g\u00e9n\u00e9ral de la UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) qui r\u00e9unit les 7 conseils de recherche et innove la recherche au Royaume-Uni gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 un budget de plus de 7 milliards de livres sterling (~ 12 milliards de $ CA). C\u2019est un champion de la science fondamentale dans les domaines de la recherche en sant\u00e9, du g\u00e9nie, de la technologie et de l\u2019innovation.<\/p>\n

Sir Mark Walport a obtenu ses dipl\u00f4mes d\u2019\u00e9tudes cliniques et doctorales de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de Cambridge. L\u2019id\u00e9e a \u00e9man\u00e9 d\u2019une entit\u00e9 appel\u00e9e \u00ab UK Research and Innovation \u00bb et, en 2018, sir Walport est devenu le premier directeur g\u00e9n\u00e9ral de ce nouveau concept audacieux.<\/p>\n

Au fil de sa carri\u00e8re, sir Walport a \u00e9galement \u00e9t\u00e9 un fervent partisan des arts et une personnalit\u00e9 populaire de la t\u00e9l\u00e9vision en tant que porte-parole de la science et de l\u2019innovation. Il a re\u00e7u de nombreux honneurs et prix, dont dix dipl\u00f4mes honorifiques et un titre de chevalier en 2009.<\/p>\n

Le Prix international de la recherche en sant\u00e9 Henry G. Friesen (de 35 000 $), cr\u00e9\u00e9 en 2005 par les Amis des Instituts canadiens de recherche en sant\u00e9 (AIRSC), reconna\u00eet l\u2019innovation exceptionnelle d\u2019un chef de file visionnaire en sant\u00e9 de calibre international.
