What has CIHR accomplished in its first year?
Here is just a taste of the hard work and many achievements
of CIHR's Council, staff, partners and researchers since June 7, 2000

Since CIHR was launched on June 7, 2000, they have:

  • appointed a President and Governing Council
  • created 13 Institutes
  • named 13 Scientific Directors to head the Institutes
  • appointed 218 Institute Advisory Board members to assist the SDs
  • held more than 50 meetings involving Council and its committees
  • facilitated over 550 meetings, university visits and events featuring SDs
  • welcomed 62 new staff including 24 summer students in 2001
  • lost 130 pounds through the employee Weight Watcher program
  • sent the President or senior managers to more than 100 speaking engagements from Prince Edward Island to Australia
  • developed an e-service strategy inaugurated by the common CV project
  • worked with the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council to harmonize award administration
  • helped design and implement a program to provide 2000 research chairs across Canada
  • processed 5956 grant applications
  • invested @ $370 million in 5,743 grants and awards to researchers in 70 Canadian universities, hospitals and research centres plus 132 grants to other organizations in Canada and 1 outside the country
  • increased the total number of grants by 10% and their average value by 20%
  • provided 820 studentships and doctoral research awards
  • awarded 676 postdoctoral and senior research fellowships
  • funded 106 Canada Research Chairs
  • supported 21 clinical trials including several large international trials
  • been associated with major breakthroughs in understanding of cell growth regulation, cell life span control, treatment of diabetes, improved brain function, preventing birth complications, neural centre for emotion, genetics of prostate cancer, stem cell stimulation and cancer control.
  • involved 16 Rx& D companies and 21 University Industry partners in various projects and maintained and added to our links with over 80 other partners
  • supported 29 large multidisciplinary projects involving more than 500 investigators, 80 partners in 5 countries and $77 million over three to five years
  • launched the CIHR Intranet and Institute web sites
  • developed the CIHR researcher database for our web site
  • published assorted booklets and information pieces on Ethics, tips for grant applications, and CIHR
  • launched a program for developing science writers.
  • issued 40 press releases
  • appeared in 537 media stories
  • translated nearly 2 million words
  • answered over 7,000 calls at the reception desk
  • processed 24,425 pieces of incoming mail through registry and sent out 20,000
  • received 26,515,441 hits on our web site
